Women in the NAACP (WIN) is an organized committee that was founded by Frances Hooks, the wife of NAACP Executive Director, Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks, to empower women and girls in alliance with the overall goals of the NAACP. WIN mentors young girls in maneuvering pathways to wise decisions and positive self- development. WIN assists women in leadership development and in addressing issues that effect the lives of Black women and their children, i.e. health, education, trafficking, serving in community roles, economics, being at the table on boards and commissions and in the fight for civil and human rights. WIN responds to disasters; aids women transitioning from prison to home; coordinates financial literacy workshops and conducts leadership training. Among major achievements, WIN has built schools in Yawa, Benin, (West Africa) and in Hetin, Benin. These schools also serve as the major community centers in the respective very rural areas in Benin, site of the Trans- Atlantic Slave Trade. Also, WIN has worked in partnership with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in developing and executing a nationwide SIDS Awareness Program (Sudden Death Syndrome). In addition to this overall background information, please be sure to review the 2019 NAACP Bylaws for Units, Article VIII Article Section 5u, Committees of Units, page 48. It will also help you as you assist in organizing the NAACP NYCHA WIN Committee. You can access on the NAACP website; naacp.org
